Global Game Jam 2013 Diversifiers
Here comes the list that you have been waiting for: The list of Global Game Jam 2013 Diversifiers.
The GGJ Diversifier system is a system aimed at diversifying the games as well as providing motivation for experienced game jammers. In a sense, the diversifiers are a free-for-all voluntary list of secondary constraints, that the individual teams can choose to go for, or not, as they please. If they do go for one or more diversifiers, they get to tick off those diversifiers as fulfilled when uploading their game. As stated above, the diversifiers are absolutely voluntary, and no points are given for taking them. If you are a first time team of students, we recommend that you focus primarily on the overall constraint, and only add in extra diversifiers if you feel sure you will have something to hand in on Sunday.
Global Game Jam 2013 Diversifiers
1. Stay Inside The Box
The whole game takes place in just one screen, no scrolling or changing screens in any way is allowed.
2. True Colors
The game uses only the basic 16 colors: black, gray, silver, white, maroon, red, olive, yellow, green, lime, teal, aqua, navy, blue, purple and fuchsia. http://www.december.com/html/spec/color16codes.html
3. Atari Age
The game must be, at a maximum, 4Kb in size.
4. I Know What You Did Last Summer
Game world is persistent between sessions and changes from one session affect game play on the following ones.
5. Backwards
One or more aspects of the game works the opposite as would normally be expected: maybe the controller is reversed (left is right, right is left), maybe you win lives every time you die, maybe it scrolls to the left and your character moonwalks.
6. I’m Board
Make a game that is inspired by, but not a simulation of, a popular board game.
7. The Truth is Out There
Some external real world element, such as weather, time of the day, etc, affects gameplay. It MUST affect gameplay and can’t be only a scenario element.
8. No cheating (please)
The game system relies on willing player participation to enforce the rules of the game world (e.g., hold your breath, close your eyes, etc.).
9. More the Merrier
The game is a competitive or cooperative multiplayer "party game" (i.e., based on minigames, humor, 4+ players, audience engagement, etc.), meant for one screen or more.
10. 10 little pigs
The game uses 10 or more buttons or keys for gameplay-related actions (no pause or anything else).
11. Two Are Better Than One
The game requires two or more different mobile devices to play.
12. Approved for All Audiences
The game must not show any violence, not even cartoonish. Stepping on living mushrooms is off the list, as is killing any type of enemies, not even undead, though we know they’re already dead…
13. Inclusive
The game is specifically designed to include people with a given disability.
14. X Marks the Spot
The game involves something location-based, such as a geocache, or requires the player to go to one or more specific geographic locations.
Sponsored Diversifiers
15. Bigger Picture
The game touches on a political, environmental or social issue.
16. May the (Web) Force Be with You
The game runs in a browser with no plugin.

Stay Inside The Box
Does Tetris fulfill the Diversifier "Stay Inside The Box"?
Yup
Sure
By no plugin...
Does Flash or Nacl count as a web plugin?
html
Take it as "html/html5". No Flash, at least!
4Kb? Popular?
What does 4Kb on "Atari Age" means? Is it 4kb (kilobits)? Or is it supposed to be 4kB (kilobytes)?
Also, what is considered "popular" for the "I’m Board" one? I guess the most obvious like Catan or Monopoly are certainly acceptable, but would, say, James Earnest's TimeLine or Bruce Allen's Tobago be okay for that?
4 KiloBytes
It would be 4 kiloBytes not 4 kilobites
But if you could…
Imagine a game in 0.5KB though!
4 kilobytes!
Sorry about that.
More than 4?
In the last edition there was a limit of 4 diversifiers... now I can't find anything about that, does that mean this time we can try as many as we like?
Also, what is with "sponsored diversifiers"? What's the difference with normal ones?
More than 4?
When your finished game is uploaded, you can only choose four diversifiers to link it in the database. If you'd still like to actually meet more of the diversifiers yourself, just as a challenge, that's fine, but the game won't be searchable on them. You might want to list them in the game description in that case.
Domo~
Thanks for the answer n_n
2. True Colors
16 is the maximum quantity for these colors or the game must have exactly the 16 colors quoted?
Palette!
Take it as you have 16 colors palette available - use what you choose, but there is not more than 16 options. :)
17th collor
Does transparency count as a 17th collor? (AKA can I use transparency or not?)
Board!
Someone asked what "popular" meant re Board Games. Basically, anything someone could reasonably have heard of!
3. Atari Age
The game must be, at a maximum, 4Kb in size !!!! how can we add music or professional graphic by this limitation ?
my mention is 4kb limitation just for code and programing >?

Palette. Any 16 colors or exactlt 'those' colors?
Hey guys. Instead of using the specified Windows color set could we use the slightly different but better looking DOS palette?
5. Backwards
Does use of IOPL count as backward of WASD (we want control on right hand).
backwards achivement
iopl keys count as a backwards achivement for wasd?
video games only?
The rules for the GGJ specifically say that the submissions can be tabletop board games *OR* video games, but all of the diversifiers are clearly directed at video games. Can this be clarified? Are there no diversifiers for people doing tabletop games?
About True Colors
Does using standard black Fade-In and Out for transitions break the rules for True Colors (As, if you have something white on the screen, it goes through hues of grey that are not listed on the palette)?
Limited number of diversifiers?
Our game uses more than 4 diversifiers, and we were wondering how we could indicate that, because the system allows us to choose only 4. Is there a way around this? Or was this a condition from beginning , because I couldnt find such a condition anywhere.
Thanks :)
