Game: PoPo - our first game ever !

POPO - [Note: That's a reference to the classic 80s Atari racing arcade machine 'Pole Position'] High-level: POPO is an abstract F1 racing simulator based on a simple pen-and-paper game. MOAR!-deets: - Played on a grid-based map, players begin POPO by tracing a desired track design onto an empty grid - POPO races are turn-based, with players alternating to propel their respective race cars sequentially closer from start-line to finish-line - Movement in POPO is defined by the following 2 rules: > Race car placement is structured by the grid - race cars can only be placed on vertices where perpendicular grid lines cross > Race cars have a sense of momentum through the concept of 'gears' - i.e. each turn, the player decides whether to drop, raise on retain their current gear. Eg. If I was in 2nd gear, I can now drop to 1st, remain in 2nd, or accelerate to 3rd. Say I chose to go into 3rd gear, in my subsequent turn, I will then have to choose to drop to 2nd, stay in 3rd, or accelerate into 4th. Q. Why wouldn't I just keep increasing my gears all the way to 6th then ? A. Because of momentum (and you shut your mouth - or so help me god - I'll punch your lights out). Accelerating too quickly will mean that you won't be able to slow down enough to make the next turn as your momentum is now too great to be reeled in in time. - The first player to cross the line (after all players have had equal # of turns), wins! CAN WE HAZ EVEN MOAR DEETS? - No. MOAR DEETS!! - Crashing occurs when your momentum becomes too great & you end up exiting the track boundaries that were initially laid down. This incurs a skip-next-turn penalty & a video plays. - Competing race-cars cannot occupy the same grid-vertice at any one time Some crazy ideas: 1. Pull-release mechanic to propel the cars round the track (makes a 'PO-PO!' sound as this is done) 2. Accelerating into higher gears decreases your visibility, progressively dimming more & more of the track in front of you, impairing you selection 3. Track pickups manifest randomly (á la Mario Kart), giving players something to aim for as they race along. > Luckily for us, the Random POPO Pickup Generator ™ has already produced the following pieces of awesome: - 'La Bomba' - suffer immediate engine-failure. Drop 2 gears. - 'Fin(n)ish' - become the Iceman. Jump up 2 gears when desired. - 'Phat Rimz' - become too fly to be seen around other ordinary race cars. No other player can get within 1 square of you. - 'Pissing In The Driving Seat' - have your brake-cables cut in 18 different places. You cannot slow down for 3 turns. - 'The Stoner' - you can't be bothered and decide to return home. The start-line now becomes the finish line. That's POPO! How to play: 1. Run PoPo.exe executable 2. Select a resolution higher than 1024x768 3. Click through 'Start Game' 4. Click and drag mouse to draw desired racing track 5. click on red cube (player car) to begin race 6. (optional bug) click once more on red cube 7. Click on green cubes to direct your car around the track 8. Accept developer apologies for the crappiness of our first ever game

Diversifiers

Stay Inside The Box: The whole game takes place in just one screen, no scrolling or changing screens in any way is allowed.
I’m Board: Make a game that is inspired by, but not a simulation of, a popular board game.
No cheating (please): The game system relies on willing player participation to enforce the rules of the game world (e.g., hold your breath, close your eyes, etc.).
Approved for All Audiences: The game must not show any violence, not even cartoonish. Stepping on living mushrooms is off the list, as is killing any type of enemies, not even undead, though we know they’re already dead…
